SDSU's primary land-grant mission is to create opportunities for South Dakota through research and education. Today, research provides a solid knowledge base for economic development, academic programs, and experiential opportunities for students.

Primary strengths include agriculture, engineering, human health and nutrition, renewable energy, pharmaceutical sciences, geospatial information sciences, environmental sciences, and many other
fields.
